An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion surged in the hours before Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Market statistics shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But the odds had increased to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity just before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.

Several of other individuals also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to predict everything from sports to politics.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the event betting space.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
