Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
