Crew Member Reveals Depression After ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

About the Mission

The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from various fields.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
