RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts down to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
