During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an audacious start to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
